Locals Have Mixed Feelings On Amazon’s Retreat

Long Island City residents had mixed reactions last week when Amazon announced that it was pulling out of a deal to move half its new headquarters to the Queens neighborhood. While some residents interviewed by local radio station WCBS 880 were disappointed by the move, others noted that the tax incentives offered to the massive corporation were disconcerting. After riding the initial wave of excitement, Modern Spaces CEO Eric Benaim is confident that, while the deal would have brought jobs to the neighborhood, the market for LIC condos is still strong, thanks to the area’s location, infrastructure, and growing cultural capital.
