As New Yorkers well know, New York City is the one of the world’s foremost meccas of culture, nightlife, fashion, fine dining, and the everyday excitement and buzz. And our city pulls out all the stops for the holiday season—with sights and sounds that draw visitors from across the globe; even longtime denizens can rediscover its charms and new marvels each holiday season. This year, the team at Modern Spaces has put together an itinerary of must-visit destinations for residents in its Long Island City condos as they explore new corners of the city and favorite holiday gems during the most festive time of the year.
The first holiday destination is Rockefeller Center, the celebrated epicenter of the city’s holiday festivities. For more than 80 years, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has been adorned with lights and decorations—and, this year, with a brilliant Swarovski star on its crown. A visit to 30 Rock and the tree is the storybook capstone of the New York holiday experience, but visitors can also make a full day of a visit to Rockefeller Center, with a self-guided audio tour and a meal, warm cookies, or hot cocoa at the holiday stands or nearby restaurants. Of course, for ice skaters, a few spins or laps on the ice at The Rink are another quintessential holiday pastime, as is a trip to the Top of the Rock for panoramic views of the city.
Next up, a stroll to Saks Fifth Avenue will continue the holiday merriment with a brilliant light show and breathtakingly elaborate holiday window displays. This year, the holiday windows elaborate on the ideas and imaginations of local NYC children, who were asked to describe their holiday dreams—all brought to life by Saks artists and engineers. The traditional Saks light show will brighten the 10-story building facade with more than 700,000 LED lights, creating a dramatic and captivating holiday mood.
Finally, the Bryant Park Winter Village will transport visitors to a veritable holiday wonderland. From the free ice-skating rink and the Curling Café & Bar to reservable private Cozy Igloos for indoor/outdoor dining, the Winter Village offers a wealth of options to put everyone in the holiday spirit. Visitors can also browse the array of shops and vendors for some last-minute holiday shopping, pick up a scarf or mittens from the apparel and accessories shops before hitting the rink, or enjoy waffles and a coffee while browsing and soaking in the ambiance. Santa will also be on-site for photos with families and kids before his big Christmas delivery route.
